Former President Barack Obama will campaign with Democrat Abdul El-Sayed in Detroit later this month, the Michigan Senate hopeful announced on Monday.
“It is my honor and privilege to announce that President @BarackObama is joining us on the trail in Detroit on Saturday, October 24,” El-Sayed wrote Monday on X. “Get. Ready.”
The rally will also feature Democratic gubernatorial nominee Jocelyn Benson, and falls on the first day of Michigan’s mandatory early in-person voting period.
El-Sayed is facing Republican Mike Rogers for the open seat held by retiring Democratic Sen. Gary Peters — a tight race that polling has shown is neck-and-neck.

Detroit is also an important target for El-Sayed. He lost Wayne County, home to the state’s largest city, to Rep. Haley Stevens in the Democratic primary, despite narrowly winning statewide. Former Vice President Kamala Harris campaigned with him in Detroit last month.
Obama has been stepping up his involvement in the midterms. He taped two dozen ads last week for Democratic Senate and gubernatorial candidates, with more campaign stops planned in the final weeks before the election, according to the Associated Press.
