Sen. Chris Murphy had a stroke on Saturday, the Connecticut Democrat’s office said in a statement.

“The doctors are encouraged by his progress, he is awake and alert, and we are optimistic he will make a full recovery,” his office said Sunday morning.

Murphy, 53, is receiving treatment at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, his office said.

Murphy is one of the more high-profile Senate Democrats and is a member of party leadership in the chamber. He’s also considered a potential presidential candidate for 2028.
