Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent will not be the next AI czar, President Donald Trump announced Friday, leaving the coveted White House role open as the AI industry’s rapid development becomes a leading policy issue in Washington.
The announcement followed reports that Bessent was a front-runner for the job after taking a leading role in the administration’s AI policy.
“Scott Bessent will not be going to be Super Intelligence (SI) Czar. Number One, he doesn’t want to. Number Two, he’s doing such a great job at Treasury, and that’s where I want to keep him! Why would I ever make such a change? Just more Fake News!” Trump wrote in a TruthSocial post.
Bessent oversees the exploding sector’s impact on the economy from his perch at Treasury.

The previous crypto and AI czar, David Sacks, vacated the position in March. He currently co-chairs the president’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology.
