White House Says It Asked Kimberly Guilfoyle to Resign as Greece Ambassador

Guilfoyle has been under fire following media reports she pressured a donor to pay off her debt before her confirmation.

The White House has asked Kimberly Guilfoyle to resign as U.S. ambassador to Greece, press secretary Katie Zacharia said Tuesday.

According to reporting by The Wall Street Journal last week, Guilfoyle asked Trump donor Eric Deters to cover a $100,000 credit card bill shortly before her confirmation hearing and offered him access to administration officials in return. Guilfoyle also reportedly told guests at a reception that the United States would destabilize the Greek government if it wanted to. The ambassador’s lawyer has said she did nothing wrong.

“She has been a wonderful asset to the team, and we wish her well,” Zacharia said.

President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio had been weighing her dismissal, The Associated Press reported over the weekend. Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D-New Hampshire), Rep. Robert Garcia (D-California) and other Democratic lawmakers have called for an investigation and her removal.
