Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived to a red-carpet greeting at Joint Base Andrews on Wednesday night ahead of a much-anticipated state visit with President Donald Trump.
Trump and first lady Melania Trump welcomed the Chinese delegation on the tarmac with a show of military might and pomp. A military cordon stood at attention alongside American dignitaries in front of a sprawling phalanx of F-22 and F-16 fighter jets, as B-1 bombers circled overhead.
The two leaders walked the length of the red carpet as an honor guard shot off a salute battery and the Marine Band struck up the U.S. national anthem.
The visit comes as the Trump administration steps up pressure on countries accused of supporting Iran. The two leaders are expected to discuss tensions in the Middle East at a State Dinner on Thursday night, and are hoping to make progress on a deal establishing a new bilateral trade board coupled with some tariff relief.

A discussion on AI governance is also likely: Prominent technology industry leaders are expected to attend, including OpenAI’s Sam Altman, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and SpaceX and Tesla founder Elon Musk, according to a senior U.S. official.
