Trump Pledges to Appoint an ‘AI Czar’ as He Defends the Technology

The president did not detail what the office’s responsibilities would look like or who he could appoint to the role.

President Donald Trump said he will soon appoint an artificial intelligence czar amid heightened scrutiny of whether the technology is progressing at a dangerous pace, he announced Saturday on Truth Social.

In a long post defending the industry, Trump said he would create an “AI Force” without specifying its exact functions. He added that in his capacity as president, he would “not stand by” and allow its “decimation, or destruction.”

Lawmakers and tech leaders have sounded the alarm in recent weeks over the advancement of AI and its potential threat to society — including Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, who called for AI companies like his own to slow the technology’s progression last week. Trump has repeatedly pushed back against such concerns and framed AI development as an innovation race between the United States and China.

“We will not in any way hinder or stifle the Growth of this incredible Industry,” Trump wrote. “Rather, we will cherish it, help it, and watch over it, as it grows!”

Trump didn’t provide further detail about what the AI czar’s responsibilities would be or who he was considering for the role, only that he planned to announce the appointment soon.

In a separate post on Truth Social, Trump floated alternatives for a “far more elegant and accurate description” of the technology, suggesting a rebrand of “Superior Intelligence,” “Extreme Intelligence” or “Supreme Intelligence.”

AI is expected to be a point of contentious discussion when Chinese President Xi Jinping visits the White House next week for the first time in more than a decade. The Trump administration has also reportedly invited several technology executives to the state dinner, among them AI developers Jensen Huang of Nvidia and OpenAI’s Sam Altman.
