Commanders general manager Adam Peters said that the team doesn’t expect star quarterback Jayden Daniels to need surgery on his injured elbow, and that there hasn’t been any discussion about placing him on injured reserve.
In a Friday morning appearance on “The Sports Junkies” on 106.7 The Fan, Peters said the team is trying to make the right medical decision to get the former Heisman Trophy winner back on the field this season.
“He just got back late last night, this morning, and we met with doctors, and it’s just a matter of thinking what the next best course of action is,” Peters said. “As of right now, surgery is not on the table, and we haven’t discussed IR. So it’s just a matter of how we’re going to get him back on the field.”
Daniels dislocated his left elbow on the final play of the first half in the Commanders’ 37-20 Week 2 loss to the Cowboys in Dallas. He dropped back under center on a third-and-goal situation, stumbled and planted his left arm on the field before shoveling an incomplete pass to the sideline.

“It wasn’t good,” Peters said, describing his initial reaction to the injury from the press box. “It wasn’t poised. It wasn’t cool, calm and collected.”
Peters said when he went to see Daniels after the game, he felt a lot better about the situation. He said Daniels had handled the situation “extremely well” and “definitely different than the last time.”
Daniels injured the same elbow in a 38-14 loss to the Seahawks last season, which sidelined him for seven of the team’s remaining eight games.
“I think he’s just as frustrated as anything else because he was playing so well,” Peters said. “Once I saw him and talked to him, he probably calmed me down more than anything.”
Before Sunday’s injury, Daniels had thrown for 96 yards and a touchdown and led the team on the ground with 69 rushing yards on seven carries.
