Officials with the Prince George’s County Police Department have ruled the death of a Black man found hanging on the side of a road in Upper Marlboro to be a suicide.
In a statement, the department said that detectives who responded to the scene along the 9300 block of D’Arcy Road early Sunday morning immediately opened a death investigation, which included speaking to witnesses and those who knew the man, the statement read.
Based on the preliminary investigation and “learning about his background,” the investigators believe it was a suicide, officials say, with no evidence of foul play found at this time.
The department later noted the trauma the scene may have caused residents.

“We understand this incident is both disturbing and painful to residents who may have driven by the scene or learned about this incident throughout the day,” the statement said.
County leaders held a community event Monday to offer mental health resources and counseling to residents, along with a news conference in which Prince George’s County Executive Aisha Braveboy was joined by other county council members and police officials to quash rumors and misinformation about the incident.
“The community needs and deserves the truth, and we want to provide as much information to the residents as we possibly can,” Braveboy said in the news conference, “respecting the fact that an individual is dead and his family and friends are grieving.”
