A National Guard member was shot in the leg late Sunday night while attempting to break up a fight near Capitol Hill’s Eastern Market neighborhood, interim Metropolitan Police Chief Jeffery Carroll said Monday.

The guard member and a person who police say shot at the guard were hospitalized with injuries not considered life-threatening, Carroll said.

A group of seven or eight guard members were sitting in a van when a fight broke out in the 400 block of 8th Street SE around 11 p.m. Sunday, Carroll said. The guard members exited the vehicle to intervene when a person involved in the fight started firing a gun. Police said the person shot toward the group of National Guard members, who returned fire. Three guard members discharged their weapons.

The alleged shooter was shot in the abdomen and one guard member was shot in the leg, Carroll said.

The shooting comes nearly a year after two National Guard members were shot near the White House, one fatally. Rahmanullah Lakanwal was charged with more than a dozen federal crimes in the shooting. He pleaded not guilty. Court proceedings are ongoing.

It’s been more than a year since President Donald Trump deployed the guard to D.C. as part of what he touted as a crackdown on crime.
