Is Your Home Budget Around $500,000? Three Options to Consider in D.C., Maryland and Virginia

For many first-time homebuyers in the DMV, it’s the price that drives everything, rather than a particular home style or neighborhood. Depending on where they work or where they want their kids to attend school, they may be willing to look at homes in D.C., Maryland and Virginia as long as the price is right.

Buying a home priced at $500,000, which is below what Bright MLS says is the median sales price of $610,000 in the D.C. region, requires a minimum income of about $150,000 to $160,000. However, you need to talk to a lender who can help you estimate how much you can borrow based on your other debt, the size of your down payment and associated costs such as a homeowner or condo association fee, in addition to taxes and insurance. We found two townhouses and a condo priced between $499,000 and $600,000 to consider.

Which would you choose? Or, have a comparison you’d like to see in an upcoming column? Let us know at metro@washingtonsun.com.
