A Republican district attorney in West Texas has opened a forgery investigation into pamphlets mailed to voters this month containing information for transgender students, claiming to be sent by a trans rights organization.
The pamphlets in question detail information about what children can do to receive gender-affirming care and legal emancipation, as well as steps a student can take if their parents don’t support having a trans child.
The pamphlets state they were sent out by Transgender Education Network of Texas but the organization denied it had distributed the mailers. The Texas Tribune reported this week that the pamphlets were sent out by a limited liability company in Wyoming, and that the transgender rights group had received backlash and violent threats.
Sarah Stogner, the district attorney for several West Texas counties, confirmed to The Washington Sun she was launching a probe.

“It’s worth investigating and mailers were sent in my district so I have jurisdiction to investigate potential forgery,” Stogner told The Sun in an email. “I don’t want to speculate on any other conclusions at this time.”
The investigation comes after Republican state Rep. Jeff Leach sent two letters calling for state Attorney General Ken Paxton to investigate the origin of the mailers.
The Tribune first reported about the investigation. Stogner told the news outlet that she felt the mailers were an obvious bid to agitate voters ahead of the midterms, though their origin is currently unknown.
